Combined reconstruction for patellar instability may be more anatomic

A new study from researchers in Portugal describe yet another procedure to treat patellar instability. Instead of a two arm ligament reconstruction, they describe a four arm reconstruction — which could have some advantages.

However, a vital consideration with MPFL surgery is avoiding overtightening and this is somewhat more likely if four different grafts need to be attached to the soft tissue in the front of the knee.

I caution patients to ask their surgeons about their specific experience with the surgery being considered. Ultimately it is best to have the surgery your surgeon is most comfortable and experienced with.
