There is nothing scarier about sports than permanent cognitive defects due to head injury. This article in Bloomberg news talks about new helmet technology. This could be the answer.
If helmets can measure how hard the player is getting hit and keep track over a season, then we may be able to not only monitor these injuries, but stop the athlete from playing before it is too late.
This seems well within the possibility of technology and hopefully these helmets will be in popular use soon.
