Hopping Backward as an Indication of Recovery from ACL reconstruction

Hopping Backwards and ACL Reconstruction

In a study in the Journal of Sport and Health Science, they found that assessing how well patients are able to hop backward may be a better way of evaluating patients’ strength as they recover from ACL surgery.

“People may not think of knee function or hopping backward as a natural part of movement, but people do use backward direction, such as walking backwards regularly in rehab,” Song said.

We are constantly looking for relatively simple ways of assessing patient’s strength after surgery in order to determine when they are ready to get back to sports, perhaps a backward hop may be better than what our physical therapists currently do when testing a patient to return to sport.
